INTERNET SPEED TEST www.zdnet.com.au/broadband/speedtest Click 'at home'. If you also click the 'Results by Country' Tab, see just how shocking Australia's Internet really is, scroll down to see how Low we Rate! ..Yes Folks, we're being kept in the Dark-Ages & fed 'BS'.. ADSL 'Broadband' Explained INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDER (ISP): The Company you contract to for Internet Access, usually for a Monthly Fee. ADSL 1 Broadband is available most places for approx $30/$40 per month for a Speed of 256kbs (kilobits per second) commonly called 'Fraudband' in Australia because of its low speed & very poor usage limit per month offerings compared to the speeds/limits common overseas. ADSL 2+ (Speeds Up to 20mbs - nearly 80 times faster) has actually been installed in many exchanges (incl. Leeton) for years! but Telstra did not enabled it until April 2008. (at rediculous prices) EXCESS There is usually an 'Included Download Limit' in Megabytes (MB) or Gigabytes (GB). The Catch is in the 'Excess' Charges! At Charging around 15 cents per MB (1,000 MB = 1 GB) that equals $150 per GB! Compared to a going rate of $3 per GB, that's 5,000% more! and in my opinion unconscionable conduct by those companies. Many friends have been caught with that, ...so... My Advice: Shop around! Compare! You will be Amazed! Find Plans: http://bc.whirlpool.net.au (Australian Broadband Choice) Please Don't Sign Contracts for 2-3 years: prices change, you can get Contracts for only 6 months! and monthly! You can easily get 5+ GB per month for $30/$40 per month, & Excess Fees should be only approx $3 per GB. If they give you 200-400MB included per month, then Go Elsewhere! eg. HERE ! (Excess Charges per Gigabyte is the go, Charging per Megabyte is a Rip-Off!) Dec 2009 Update: Telstra now 2GB limit! still terrible excess (see * fine print) BIGPOND - Note Excess: $0.15/MB that equals $150 per GB, Shaped EXETEL - Note Excess: Not MB, it's GB! only $3 per GB, $0.50 per GB FIND BEST PLANS: http://bc.whirlpool.net.au (Australian Broadband Choice) (Note: 1,000 MB = 1 GB - Quoting Excess Charges in MB belongs in the Dialup Era) COMPUTER TIPS (Please advise Faulty Links or Errors, Click Menu Contact Button. Thanks) OPERATING SYSTEM (OS): If you have Microsoft Windows XP it should have SP2/SP3 installed by now & be regularly updating, and also have IE7/IE8 installed for improved functions & better security. Ensure your Computer receives Regular Updates from 'Microsoft Update' (Free) AND make sure that you Regularly Update both your Anti-Virus / Anti-Spyware (AVG, Ad-Aware, Spybot are FREE) ANTI-VIRUS UPDATED! New AVG 9 (Free Edition) Anti-Virus has Anti-Spyware. I have tested & works well. See Link Top of this column: AVG INTERNET HOME PAGE: This is the page your "Internet Browser" will open on when you click the The Simplest, Fastest Website to use is: www.google.com.au ..just click to try it! (to save this setting, click 'Tools' > 'Internet Options' > check/enter 'Home Page' as http://www.google.com.au then click apply/ok) If you are on Dial-Up OR Broadband, it's FAST to load, tho for ADSL Broadband (on a decent plan!) it's not so critical. Aug 2009: I can't recommend New Microsoft Search BING (not yet anyway) ...it's Beta & Misses Websites! Compare here: Google Bing Jan 2010: Wow, finally better listings..! GOOGLE MAPS: The easiest way to navigate a Map is to place your Mouse over the Map, the Cursor changes to a 'Hand' then Left-Click & Hold on the Map (the hand will grab) then DRAG the Map to where you want & Release (repeat as needed). Use the Scroll-Wheel on the Mouse to ZOOM In & Out... Much Easier..! RELOAD / REFRESH PAGE: If a page is showing incorrectly or old information, your 'temp' files may need 'updating'. - Click Refresh - OR, Press "Ctrl+F5" at the same time. - this forces your Browser to get the Newest Version of your Page. You may also need to delete your Browsers History "Cache" as below. NB. For Highest Security in Internet Explorer, I recommend you "Regularly"... 1). Click > Tools (IE7) / Safety (IE8) > Delete Browsing History > Delete All > 2). (IE7) Also Select 'Delete Info in Add-ins' > Then Click "YES". ALWAYS do this if you are using a Public Computer! (eg. Internet Cafe) WEB BROWERS 'ACID-3' TEST: for Microsoft IE, Firefox, Chrome, Safari, etc. Try it here! Take the Acid3 Test It should look like this: http://acid3.acidtests.org/reference.html MS IE7=14% - FF3.07=71% - Chrome1=79% - Safari 3.22=79% MS IE8=20% - FF3.55=93% - Chrome2=100% - Safari4(beta)=100% More Info here: Wikipedia-Acid3 (link opens new tab/window) ![]() |
